RIP Shorty Lee

Wood block print - 2020

About 20 minutes before I saw this sign, I had driven by a different remarkable scene. I was driving through western New Mexico - in the area near Pie Town (a side story in itself) - when I looked up and saw a hitchhiking human figure, wrapped head to toe in scraps of fabric, with only their eyes visible. About 50 yards from the sparse 2 lane highway was a large tree with an intact bed mattress under its shade, presumably belonging to this person. We are quite far from any kind of civilization. I asked my passenger if she happened to see that? She did not. I was still thinking about that scene (who was this person? How did they come to be there? Feeling a little guilty for not helping?) when I caught this small roadside sign out of the corner of my eye as we drove by. ...Did you see THAT?! ...She did not. At this point, I have to turn around to make sure I'm not going crazy. We backtracked about 10 minutes but did ultimately find this sign commemorating the late Shorty Lee, and I was obsessed. It was the coolest, strangest thing I had ever seen. I love New Mexico. It's the weirdest place I've ever been, in the most beautiful and painful of ways.  That is what this print is, just a dedication of my love for the things you will see in NM.
